London 2012: Games are ?first to place coordinated emphasis on sustainability?

The organisation today published its Pre-Games Review, which looks at sustainability issues around the Games.

It examined a series of factors including waste, energy, food and transport and said the London 2012 Games had made significant achievements in these areas, and paved the way for long-term legacy benefits.

Shaun McCarthy, chairman of the Commission, said: ?London 2012 will be a uniquely sustainable Olympics and Paralympics. This is the first Games to place such a coordinated emphasis on sustainability.

?We?ve been, for the most part, very impressed by the hard work that?s gone into planning a sustainable Games.

?What we as a Commission want to see is those plans transferring into practice on the day, because if that doesn?t happen, the ability to call these Games truly sustainable would obviously be in doubt.?

The Commission will be monitoring a series of things at the Games, including the waste strategy put in place by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). The group said LOCOG had a well-prepared waste strategy, but did say there were some concerns around waste segregation.

It will also be looking at whether the principle of active travel and the public transport Games is being upheld.

LOCOG?s food vision deserves ?wide praise?, according to the Commission.

After the Games the Commission will be developing a series of roundtable discussions called Beyond 2012 to take forward the sustainability lessons from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
