Out of Step

Gymnastics fans, like politicians campaigning in the heartland, like to look to the past as a better, purer time. Instead of pointing to two-parent families and white picket fences, gymnastics adherents yearn for more classically trained, balletic athletes who could dance and express as well as they could tumble. Is this a case of faulty memory, or is it true that the women?s floor exercise has transformed from lovely performance art on par with Cirque du Soleil to a graceless exhibition of athleticism at the expense of beauty?

Brett FavreAP

The Brett Favre playing era ended in 2010. ?The Brett Favre coaching era officially has begun.

When agent Bus Cook recently acknowledged that Favre would be helping out at Oak Grove high school, the place where Favre prepared for his various unretirements, Cook didn?t know what Favre?s precise role would be. ?As it turns out, Favre will serve as offensive coordinator, according to the Associated Press.

And Oak Grove isn?t some rinky-dink school. ?The 6A program at the 1,500-student facility is a perennial power in Favre?s home state of Mississippi.

?The stress is already getting to me,? Favre joked. ??I?ll wake up in the middle of the night saying, ?Hey, maybe we can do this? ?Maybe that will work???

If it doesn?t work, he won?t lose any money. ?He?s doing the job without pay. ?And perhaps for good reason.

?My experience in pro football means nothing,? Favre said. ?Absolutely nothing here. ?It?s totally different. ?So our biggest learning curve as a team might be my learning curve.?

So what does Favre bring to the table?

?I really believe I?m good at reading people,? Favre said. ??From being in the huddle, being in the locker room and in all those meetings for all those years, I understand that some people learn this way and some learn another way. . . . ?My whole job is to try and keep things simple. ?The more you have to think, the less your talent can show.?

It also gives Favre a way to keep busy, without having to leave home.

?One of the reasons I retired in the first place was I wanted to be in one place and experience all these things with my family,? Favre said. ?This year will be a trial basis [for coaching]. ?I feel like I can help the kids, but I?m not promising we?ll win any more games. ?Shoot, we might not win one.?

Favre?s comments help explain why he hasn?t gotten into broadcasting. ?Unlike players, who have 10 road games per year, players-turned-media-members are on the road every week. ?For Favre, he would have been traveling to a game site every Thursday or Friday, or to the ESPN (Connecticut), NBC (New York), CBS (New York), or HBO (L.A.) studios every Friday or Saturday.

Plus, he would have had to wear a tie. ?And something other than flip-flops.

He?ll likely be wearing something other than flip-flops on the sidelines at Oak Grove. ?But there will be no ties, and the travel will entail at most hopping into a bus on Friday afternoon, and getting home late Friday night.

Alcohol Is a Social Lubricant, Study Confirms

MONDAY, July 30 (HealthDay News) -- You've seen those commercials with fun-loving people sharing a laugh over a cold brew. Now, a new study lends scientific support to the notion of alcohol as a social icebreaker.

Researchers found that drinking moderate amounts of alcohol in a group setting boosts people's emotions and enhances social bonding.

The study also found that moderate consumption of alcohol can minimize negative emotions -- or at least reduce displays such as being silent in a group or making faces with wrinkled noses or pursed lips.

In the study, published recently in the journal Psychological Science, researchers randomly assigned 720 men and women to groups of three people who didn't know one another. They said previous studies have focused on alcohol's effect on individuals.

"We felt that many of the most significant effects of alcohol would more likely be revealed in an experiment using a social setting," study author Michael Sayette, a professor of psychology at the University of Pittsburgh, said in a journal news release.

In total, 20 groups were formed consisting of every combination of genders. Each group was assigned one of the following scenarios: drink an alcoholic beverage, drink a placebo beverage or drink a nonalcoholic control beverage.

The alcoholic beverage contained one part vodka and 3.5 parts cranberry-juice cocktail, with a lower dose of vodka for women. To make placebo beverages more credible, glasses were smeared with vodka.

While seated at a round table, the participants drank three of their assigned beverages over the course of 36 minutes.

Group drinking sessions were videotaped so the researchers could analyze individual and group interactions frame by frame for facial action and group speech behavior.

Alcohol fueled social bonding and increased the amount of time people spent talking to one another. It also increased the frequency and enhanced the coordination of "true" smiles, the researchers said: All three members of the groups drinking alcohol were more likely to smile at the same time than the other groups.

Imbibers also were more likely to have all three members stay engaged in the group discussion.

Alcohol affected how strongly participants agreed with survey statements such as, "I like this group" and "the members of this group are interested in what I have to say."

[From these results], "we can begin to ask questions of great interest to alcohol researchers: Why does alcohol make us feel better in group settings? Is there evidence to suggest a particular participant may be vulnerable to developing a problem with alcohol?" Sayette said.

The study was funded by the U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

Happy, healthy Mums: From baby number 5 to 5km

As a busy Mum it's often hard to motivate yourself to keep striving towards a health and fitness goal during winter. The daylight hours are shorter and colder so it's easier to tell yourself 'you'll get out later...' But don't make the mistake of relying on motivation alone to drop a dress size, or run 2km without stopping. Whatever it is that you want to do, you've just got to DO IT, over and over again, until it just becomes a part of what you do and who you are. No excuses.

Yes, it's harder if you have a family, but if you're committed to something you'll always find a way. Take Mum-of-five, Julie Rey. She works as a full-time teacher, is studying for her Masters, AND has FIVE children ranging in age from 10 months to 8 years. She finds the time to re-build her fitness, and if she can, what's stopping you? Here's Julie's story...

It?s 5.00am as I roll over and haul myself out of bed. Which child is demanding my attention you may ask, as surely with five it must be one up too early? Actually the answer is none. While it may be 5.00am I am up to my own alarm. I have set it deliberately to get myself up. This is my time of day.

Yes, as insane as it sounds I miss my own fitness and if I want it back then I have to take it seriously.

With my ?Couch to 5km? program in hand (thanks to Coach Michelle), I am up to attack the task of being able to run distances again.

What I find amazing is how effortless it seems once you make the commitment to yourself. Is it having so many children that gives you dedication, I don?t know that this is so. Whatever it is, every time I get out the door and onto my running route, I feel fantastic. It doesn?t matter to me how fast I go but it does give me a huge sense of achievement that I met my set goal for that day.

The six weeks of my program seemed to have flown by and to celebrate my first week at running 5km I headed down to my local club for a timed run ? celebrating a 5km time of 32.06 (followed by 30.44 just three weeks later).

So what words of wisdom are there to pass on?

  1. Take time to take yourself seriously ? it doesn?t matter how big your family gets, you are worth the effort

  2. Set a goal and find out how to get yourself there (every little step towards it will make you feel fantastic!)

  3. Find your time ? it doesn?t have to be 5am, but find a time that works for you and stick to it

Pets and More Pets ? Reasons why dogs eat rocks

Dogs have great appetites and these animals have the inclination to eat questionable (at least to us humans) things. Dog experts call this habit of ingesting non-edible things as pica. Eating non-edible items is a normal behavior of dogs but dog owners would still be puzzled by this behavior more so if the pet is provided with enough food. One of the non-edible things that dogs love to eat are rocks.

As mentioned, dogs love to eat rocks but this habit is most commonly seen in puppies. Puppies are naturally inquisitive and one way of discovering their world is by using their mouth. A pet parent will be amused by the pet?s chewing as if what is being chewed is bubble gum. Eating rocks though is dangerous. Chewing rocks is really dangerous as even if the rock is not swallowed it can still injure the soft tissues of the mouth. Swallowed, the rock can cause diarrhea as it can really affect the delicate digestive tract of the dog. A rock can get lodged in the dog?s esophagus or in the intestinal tract and create a life threatening obstruction.

Dogs are really good eaters. Dog owners would always want to have the best pet unfortunately, dogs do have the inclination to develop not only socially unacceptable behaviors but dangerous ones as well. The dog?s habit of eating rocks will still puzzle a lot of pet owners. The habit of eating rocks can signify that the pet has a medical problem such as brain diseases. If an underlying medical concern was ruled out, the rock eating habit of the pet can be attributed to behavioral problems.

Boredom, stress or anxiety can urge a dog to feast on rocks. Being social animals, dogs would need interaction with the family. Dogs that do not get any attention from the family will be bored. Boredom is one of the reasons why dogs develop unacceptable behavior. Bored dogs eat rocks. Eating rocks can be the dog?s effort to get the attention of the master.

For proper diagnosis, humans have to have a series of laboratory tests. Dogs really do have amazing abilities, one of which is knowing what is wrong with their system. A nutrient deficient diet will entice a dog to eat rocks in an effort to correct the imbalance. The habit of eating rocks can be the dog?s way of calling the master?s attention to the nutrient deficient diet or to the attention that is being missed by the dog.

Billie Joe Armstrong joins NBC's 'Voice' as mentor

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? NBC's "The Voice" is adding a high-powered rocker to the mix.

NBC said Thursday that Green Day vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong has joined the talent contest as a mentor to Christina Aguilera's team this coming season.

In a statement, Armstrong said he and his family are fans of the show.

"The Voice" has won over viewers because "it's not molding artists, it's just giving them a little bit of guidance and direction without giving them a complete makeover," he said.

Besides, Armstrong says, working with Aguilera is "a lot of fun." He started taping Wednesday on "The Voice," which has been in production for season three since June.

As the talent contest field grows more crowded, shows are competing for big-name music stars. "American Idol" is adding Mariah Carey as a judge, and "The X Factor" signed Britney Spears and Demi Lovato.

"The Voice" returns Sept. 10.

That's good timing for Green Day: The band has three albums coming out in quick succession, with the first, "Uno!", to be released Sept. 25.

In addition to Aguilera, the show's coaches include Cee-Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. Carson Daly is the host.

A Red Hot Analysis On Gone Girl

Can you ever really trust your spouse?

Possibly one of the most well-respected suspense writers of 2012, bestseller Gillian Flynn once again takes us towards the edge of the seat with a tale of a marriage that takes an unexpected turn for the worst. Recently, The Chicago Tribune commented that her writing "draws you in and keeps you reading with the force of a pure but nasty addiction." Gone Girl's heady combination of razor sharp humor and delectable delivery builds a frantic chiller that baffles you until the last word.

The story begins in North Carthage, Missouri. Amy and Nick are busy preparing to celebrate their 5th anniversary, but as the dinner reservations are made and gifts are being wrapped, Amy disappears. All-American Nick quickly is thought to be behind Amy's disappearance as Flynn's readers get inside looks at Nick's horrifying thoughts. However Amy isn't so perfect herself as snippets from her diary give us a startling perspective that would unnerve even the most trusting husband. As the scrutiny builds from the cops and the media, Nick displays some odd behavior. Although there is no conclusive proof that Nick is a killer, he doesn't do himself any favors by telling lie after lie, dodging direct answers and putting off Amy's parents.

When is appears that Nick may be responsible for Amy's disappearance, other couples begin to question how well they know their own spouse. As Nick maintains his innocence the question on everyone's mind is if he isn't a killer then where is Amy? Gillian Flynn once again shows why she is a master of suspense in her latest novel Gone Girl.

Brett Klein is an independent reviewer that maintains a bestseller website on the latest novels of our time. Check out more about Gone Girl and other books on his website.

Samsung SGH-i547 runs through certification gauntlets with quad-band LTE, shroud of mystery

Samsung SGHi547 runs through test gauntlets with quadband LTE, shroud of mystery

Samsung is already cooking up a lot of mid-range phones for Sprint and Verizon in the near future. Why not throw an AT&T model on the stove? Based on a flood of certifications (and Samsung's own browser profile), the SGH-i547 will sit squarely in the mid-range of Big Blue's Android phones -- with one exception. Its 800 x 480 screen, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC won't rock most people's worlds, but the quad-band LTE still sticks out like a sore thumb despite other in-testing devices going the same route: the 700MHz, 850MHz, 1,700MHz and 1,900MHz bands may give the i547 more 4G support than AT&T-compatible 3G. We suspect the support is either an early sign of LTE futureproofing or for roaming on LTE networks as they go live around the world. Globetrotter or not, the i547 still has a lot left hidden under its kimono; we're expecting one or two more surprises before all is said and done.

(AP) ? AIDS is graying: By the end of the decade, the government estimates, more than half of Americans living with HIV will be over 50. Even in developing countries, more people with the AIDS virus are surviving to middle age and beyond.

That's good news ? but it's also a challenge. There's growing evidence that people who have spent decades battling the virus may be aging prematurely. At the International AIDS Conference this week, numerous studies are examining how heart disease, thinning bones and a list of other health problems typically seen in the senior years seem to hit many people with HIV when they're only in their 50s.

"I'm 54, but I feel older," said Carolyn Massey of Laurel, Md., who has lived with HIV for nearly 20 years.

"When I hear young people talk about, 'Well you get HIV and you take your drugs and you'll be all right' ? that's just not the truth," she said. "This is a lifelong thing we're talking about, and it unfolds every day on you."

The graying isn't just because people like Massey are surviving longer. Some of it comes from older adults being newly diagnosed, a trend U.S. health officials say is small but slowly growing. Yes, grandparents still have sex ? and that's an age group missed by all those hip safe-sex messages aimed at teens and 20-somethings.

"They let down their guard," is how Dr. Kevin Fenton of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention puts it.

Already, a third of the nearly 1.2 million people living with HIV in the U.S. are over 50, and by 2020 half will be, Fenton said at one of numerous sessions on aging at the world's largest AIDS meeting.

People 50 or older accounted for 17 percent of new HIV diagnoses in 2009, according to the CDC's latest data. That's up from 13 percent in 2001.

There aren't as good counts in poor regions of the world, where access to life-saving medications came years later than in developed countries.

But even in hard-hit sub-Saharan Africa, home to most of world's HIV-infected population, studies suggest 3 million people living with HIV are 50-plus, said Dr. Joel Negin of the University of Sydney in Australia. By 2040, he said, that could reach 9 million.

There, challenges are different. Ruth Waryaro of Kenya, addressing the conference on her 65th birthday, said clinic workers hassle her when she goes to pick up her monthly supply of medication ? not believing a grandmother really needs it.

"If you're not strong enough, you just leave the medication and go home," said Waryaro, who raised four children of her own and now is raising four AIDS orphans. She also has diabetes and high blood pressure.

As Negin pointedly told the conference, "50 is not old." But for years, world health authorities didn't even measure HIV in people beyond age 49.

Today, people who are diagnosed and treated early can expect a near-normal life-span, Dr. Anthony Fauci, infectious disease chief at the National Institutes of Health, told The Associated Press.

The new focus is on what these pioneering survivors can expect as they reach their 50s, 60s and beyond. They're now getting chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease and osteoporosis ? some of the common ailments when anyone gets old. But studies suggest people with HIV may be at higher risk for some of those illnesses, or get them earlier than usual.

"It's almost created a new subspecialty of medicine," Fauci said.

Perhaps the strongest evidence links HIV and an increased risk of heart disease. Some AIDS medications raise that risk. But in research published for the AIDS meeting, scientists at Massachusetts General Hospital uncovered another reason.

They scanned the arteries of people with and without HIV, and found the HIV patients had more inflammation inside their arteries, putting them at risk for the kind of clots that trigger heart attacks. That's even though the HIV patients had their virus well-controlled and weren't that old ? their average age was 52, the researchers reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

HIV triggers body-wide inflammation as a person's immune system tries to fight the virus, a process that persists and can quietly damage organs even with good medications, CDC's Fenton said.

HIV is not acting in a vacuum, said Dr. Amy Justice of Yale University, noting that people's histories of smoking, for example, also contribute to inflammation.

But she pointed to data from a Veterans Affairs study that said older people with HIV use more medications for other diseases than HIV-free patients the same age.

At the conference, some older people with HIV lined up to have their photographs made and their personal histories recorded, part of a Web project called "The Graying of AIDS."

It's a chance to be counted, and share knowledge.

"We're so concerned about the youth factor, we forget about the people who've brought us thus far," said Massey, the Maryland woman, who leads an HIV group called Older Women Embracing Life and works with churches to raise HIV awareness.

CDC's Fenton noted that those voices can help other older adults realize they're at risk, when they're getting back onto the dating scene after years of monogamous relationships. Older people don't use condoms as much as younger people.

"We still have this huge issue with stigma so thick you can cut it with a knife," says Massey, who also wants HIV testing to become a routine part of health check-ups. "We have to normalize the conversation."

Sanctions give PSU opponents chance to cherry pick

If you are a college football coach in need of a player or two, Penn State's misfortune could turn out to be your team's lucky strike.

There's a blue-and-white plate special going on right now in Happy Valley, and coaches from all over the country are looking at the Nittany Lions' roster like a menu ? even though a hoard of Penn State players have pledged to stick with the school through the tough times.

Illinois coaches were in State College, Pa., to recruit on Wednesday. Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez told reporters his staff has talked with a couple of Nittany Lions. Baylor coach Art Briles has said his staff was contacted by at least one Penn State player.

Preseason practice starts at Penn State on Aug. 6. The next two weeks could be the most difficult of Bill O'Brien's coaching career as he tries to keep his team together.

NCAA sanctions will keep the Nittany Lions out of a bowl game for the rest of these players' careers, and college sports' governing body is allowing any of them to transfer to another school and get on the field right away.

The only restriction is they cannot practice or play with Penn State this year and still play for another school this season.

Players can transfer and be eligible for next season any time before the start of fall practice in 2013, but O'Brien should know what he has to work with in 2012 on Aug. 6.

And he got some good news on Wednesday.

At least 13 players listed as first-stringers on the preseason depth chart affirmed their commitment to staying in Happy Valley, including senior quarterback Matt McGloin.

"We want to let the nation know that we're proud of who we are," senior fullback Michael Zordich said, flanked by his fellow players early Wednesday morning. "We're the true Penn Staters, and we're going to stick together through this. We're going to see this thing through, and we're going to do everything we can for the university. We know it's not going to be easy, but we know what we're made of."

Neither Zordich nor senior linebacker Michael Mauti ? both sons of former Penn State players ? mentioned former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky by name during the impromptu news conference, where they didn't take any questions after reading a statement.

"We take this as an opportunity to create our own legacy," Mauti said. "This program was not built by one man and it's sure as hell not going to get torn down by one man. This program was built on every alumni, every single player that came before us, built on their backs."

The Nittany Lions can't play in a bowl game until the 2016 season after an unprecedented child sex abuse scandal that shattered the program's image as a place where "success with honor" was the rule. The scholarship reductions they'll receive could make it difficult for O'Brien to field a competitive squad during the next few seasons.

On Twitter, McGloin called the NCAA penalties "extremely harsh."

"I am a Nittany Lion and will remain one," he tweeted. "I believe in the core values I have learned in this program. It is not Nittany Lion Football. It is Nittany Lion family."

Along with Mauti, Zordich, McGloin and Morris, players listed as first-teamers who attended Wednesday included wide receiver Allen Robinson; offensive linemen Donovan Smith, Matt Stankiewitch, John Urschel and Adam Gress; tight end Kyle Carter; defensive linemen DaQuan Jones and Pete Massaro; and cornerback Adrian Amos.

That group includes six seniors, three juniors, two sophomores and two redshirt freshmen.

On Wednesday night, incoming freshman quarterback Steven Bench from Georgia joined the committed, tweeting: "I have decided to stay at Penn State. I promise this team is special and will SHOCK THE WORLD over the next 4 years."

Penn State spokesman Jeff Nelson said other players had committed to return but were unable to attend Wednesday because of classes or internships.

But some players will weigh whether to transfer, with other schools wooing them. The biggest name is running back Silas Redd, who rushed for 1,241 yards as a sophomore last season. Redd has yet to reveal his plans.

Illinois spokesman Kent Brown confirmed that a group of assistant coaches traveled to State College on Wednesday to talk to some Nittany Lions players. Brown said Illini athletic director Mike Thomas informed Penn State of the trip and that it came after Nittany Lions players contacted the Illini.

Cornerback Stephon Morris, who attended Wednesday's news conference, tweeted: "We have chosen to stay at PSU & other opposing coaches are outside our apartment. Was that the intentions of the NCAA." He added the hashtags "LeaveUsAlone" and "WeAre."

There probably won't be a parade of opposing coaches showing up on the Penn State campus over the next week or so. Most will take a slightly more subtle approach and players can take five official recruiting visits to other schools, just as they did when they were being recruited out of high school.

But it won't be surprising to see some enemy colors around Happy Valley.

O'Brien told ESPN on Wednesday that while opposing coaches needed only to email or fax the compliance department to receive clearance to speak to players, he believed there was a protocol they should follow. O'Brien cited Central Florida's George O'Leary, Syracuse's Doug Marrone and Iowa's Kirk Ferentz as having reached out to him first.

Marrone and O'Brien are close friends from the time they spent working on O'Leary's staff at Georgia Tech.

It's been less than two weeks since an investigation by former FBI director Louis Freeh concluded former coach Joe Paterno and other high-ranking university officials covered up abuse allegations involving Sandusky, who awaits sentencing on charges he abused 10 boys, some of them in team facilities.

In that time, Paterno's bronze likeness has been removed from outside Beaver Stadium and the NCAA imposed harsh sanctions that include a $60 million fine and a four-year bowl ban. The NCAA also erased 14 years of Paterno's victories, stripping him of his standing as the winningest coach in the history of big-time college football.

"No sanction, no politician is ever going to take away what we've got here," Mauti said. "None of that's ever going to tear us apart. Right now all we can do is put our heads down, and we're just going to work. That's all we can do. We're going to fight for Penn State, fight for each other, because this is what Penn State's about ? fighting through adversity."

Soon after the players spoke, Penn State announced that no players would be made available for Big Ten media days, which are Thursday and Friday in Chicago.

The difference between vintage and antique furniture | Home Design ...

There is a very blurred dividing line between the concepts of vintage and antique furniture. Top antique dealers generally believe that antique furniture must be at least a century old, an interpretation known as the "100-year rule". Everything else is either vintage or collectible.

But many antique stores sell a 1930s Art Deco table as an "antique", but in another part of the store, sell a 1930s Schiaparelli gown as vintage. Some purists claim the word "vintage" should only apply to wine. Over the last decade the term "retro", meaning the period 1950s to 1970s, has become confused with "vintage".

A solution to this conundrum is to concentrate on craftsmanship, rather than the 100-year rule. True antiques should be entirely handmade. Machinery was not introduced into furniture making until the 1860s. Automatic processes meant that furniture could be produced with precision straight lines and identical components.

A true antique will have components such as handles, knobs, rungs and spindles - that should be identical - of slightly different shapes and sizes. Handcrafting cannot produce identical pieces or perfect symmetry in the manner of a machine. Even the best reproduction furniture is easily recognised because it will have equal dimensions and symmetry.

The drawers in any item of furniture give some of the best clues about its age. Joints in drawers that have been dovetailed by hand will not be equal. When a carpenter made the original antique items, the planes, drawknives and spokeshaves that were his tools would have left marks and nicks on the inside of panels and drawers.

The type of wood used for the furniture provides other pointer. Oak was the main wood used in Europe until around 1700. Walnut came into use during the reign of William and Mary (1689-1702). It was very popular during the short reign (1702 -1714) of their daughter Queen Anne. Not all Queen Anne chairs were made of walnut, but it`s a good rule to assume that most were.

Mahogany was introduced during the later part of Queen Anne`s reign and remained popular over the following centuries. Cabinet maker Thomas Chippendale (1718 - 1789) always used mahogany for his furniture. The colonial period from the late 18th century onwards witnessed the introduction of different indigenous hardwoods from Asia and South America as well maple from North America.

Finer pine furniture in Britain had been made since the Middle Ages from wood imported from Scandinavia and the Baltic countries. At the beginning of the 20th century, carpenters began importing exotic walnut woods, kingwoods and zebrawoods to use as veneers.

The finish on a piece of furniture also gives clues to its age. Shellac - an insect resin dissolved in ethyl alcohol - was the only finish used on furniture until Victorian times. Successive coats of shellac were used for sealing and sanding wood until the surface acquired a very glossy finish. Very old furniture - pre-1700 - may be sealed and finished with oil and wax. Lacquers and varnishes were introduced after the 1860s.

If you are lucky enough to have identified a glorious piece of Chippendale, avoid hiding it in a period setting. Place it by a window next to modern Venetian blinds to give a stunning effect.

The Basics Of At Home Healthcare Services | Content for Reprint

Word Count: 738 Date:

At home healthcare provides patients with the best possible care in the comfort of their own homes. In home care includes a wide range of services such as skilled nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, home health aide, and nutrition therapy.

Skilled Nursing

This is a service delivered by a licensed registered nurse or a licensed practical nurse that has training and experience in home healthcare. Skilled nursing services may include evaluation of your senior needs, education of patient, caregivers, and family members on disease processes, self-care techniques, prevention strategies, and coordinating and arranging the patient care and services with your doctor and other members of the health care team.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy services are provided for various medical conditions such as loss of muscle strength or muscle tone, loss of range of motion in the joints, fractured bones and joint replacements, neuropathies, strokes, and spinal cord injuries. Any of these conditions can cause problems in getting around or getting in and out of a chair or bed. A physical therapist can help by evaluating your senior's ability to perform activities of daily living as well as his range of general mobility, motion, balance, strength, and transfer skills. Based on his evaluation, the therapist will develop a plan of care and set goals that must be achieved during the treatment period.

Occupational Therapy

With occupational therapy, people who have health problems which limit their normal activities learn to live as self-sufficiently as possible. Most of us take for granted many of the simple things that we do every day such as bathing, dressing, fixing meals, eating, doing household chores, and managing our personal business. But to those with a disabling illness or who have suffered from an injury, completing these tasks (which are more commonly known as activities of daily living or ADLs) may not be that simple. This is why they need occupational therapists who can teach them the ways to perform these tasks, whether alone or with the help of other people or a special device. It is the goal of an occupational therapist to help senior clients restore their maximum level of independence and function in the most efficient and safest manner by evaluating and designing a personalized treatment plan.

Speech Therapy

People who have suffered from a stroke or a traumatic accident often lose their ability to communicate. It is the goal of speech therapy to restore their ability to receive or understand the words spoken to them or use words to express themselves. Speech therapists also teach their patients the mechanism we normally use to produce words such as pitch, articulation, volume, and fluency.

Home Health Aide

Home health aide services are supervised either by a registered nurse or a licensed therapist. In general, aides providing these services have gone through some special training and have experiences in providing at home healthcare. An aide is hired on a part-time basis or whenever a client has a need for personal care at home. The duties provided by a home health aide are planned by a registered nurse or a therapist together with the senior client and are added to the client's care plan. Typical services include, bathing, washing hair, changing bed linens, and providing assistance with other ADLs.

Nutrition Therapy

When managing a person's health, one can never take for granted the food and drink he takes. In fact, nutrition is often the first line of defense used in helping a patient recover from an illness or injury. When it comes to nutrition, a registered dietician is the best person qualified to identify and measure the risks, as well as develop strategies and means to bring back the senior patient into a healthy condition. When providing at home healthcare, a dietician can have a tremendous impact on the patient's quality of life.

In home care dieticians coordinate with the nursing staff, physicians, and therapists in developing and implementing a plan of care, as well as in evaluating the patient's response to it. Nutrition therapy helps patients by speeding up their recovery time and reducing relapses. Some of the medical conditions that can gain benefits from nutrition therapy are CHF, HTN, COPD, diabetes, obesity, organ failure, cancer, wounds, anorexia, GI disorders, and enteral nutrition.

Miller answered that question himself when he sat with the Portland Business Journal on July 13, his last full-day as president of the Portland Trail Blazers before returning to Nike to lead the Jordan Brand.

In this week?s print edition I wrote about Miller?s plan to grow the Jordan business, which is already the most dominant basketball brand in the U.S.

But he also addressed how his deep ties to the NBA could benefit Nike upon his return.

?Relationships, for one,? Miller said.

Blazers owner Paul Allen appointed Miller his proxy at the league Board of Governors meetings, making Miller the only non-owner at the table during critical periods, including last year?s contentious labor negotiations.

?I knew (NBA Commissioner) David Stern and (Deputy Commissioner) Adam Silver and folks at the league, but the relationships are much much stronger (now) because I?ve worked with them, I?ve gone through the trenches and the labor deal,? Miller said. ?And also, I know a lot more now about how the NBA works and how they think and operate, so I think there?s benefit with that in going back to Nike, as looking at working with them, so my perspectives will be a benefit because I understand how they do things and how they operate.?

That brings up another question

Nike?s role in professional basketball is indisputable, since its shoes are on the feet of a majority of the league?s players. But that is a relationship between the brand and the player -- not the brand and the league.
