Two Tibetans set themselves alight in China: group

Two ethnic Tibetan men set themselves on fire together in southwest China to protest Beijing's rule, causing clashes between residents and security forces, rights groups said on Tuesday.

A monk and former monk set themselves alight Monday in Aba town in Sichuan province, sparking a protest that authorities quelled by beating demonstrators with batons, Free Tibet and the International Campaign for Tibet said.

Additional security forces have been deployed to Aba, the site of several such self-immolations and attempts, said London-based Free Tibet.

One man, whose name was given as Lungtok, died and the other, Tashi, was taken to hospital with severe injuries, it said in a statement.

Nearly 50 people have set themselves on fire in recent months in Tibetan-inhabited areas of China in protest at repressive government policies, according to Free Tibet.

Officials from the Aba police and government, reached by telephone, denied knowledge of the latest incident.

Ethnic Tibetans in Tibet and surrounding regions have long-resented Chinese rule, saying it has curbed their religious freedom and diluted their culture through an influx of Han Chinese, the country's main ethnic group.

China counters that Tibetans enjoy religious freedom and have enjoyed improved living standards thanks to China's economic expansion.

The Tibetan capital Lhasa saw violent anti-Chinese government protests in 2008 that later spread to other areas inhabited by Tibetans. Authorities have kept the city under tight security since then.

A representative from each department within the City of Greer makes up an employee driven Wellness Committee. Since its start in November 2011, the Wellness Committee has held two ?Lunch ?N Learns?, a ?Team Greer?s Greatest Loser? Competition, ?Walk at Work? days and offered fitness classes. Additionally, they provide a monthly newsletter with information such as healthy recipes, fitness and wellness facts/tips, upcoming run/walk races and other information on leading a healthy lifestyle. The underlying philosophical assumptions of the Eastern Orthodox theory are Platonic (427-347 B.C., and a teacher of Aristotle 384- 322 B.C.), rather than Aristotelian.

Plato thought that every object, such as bread or wine, presented to the physical senses a derivative reality, which was the out- ward symbol or sign of the true reality, or idea, of the object. Yet the idea, or the reality, of the object was in different realm, that is to say, in heaven, not in the object itself, as Aristotle held. When one?s senses registered bread and wine, for example, the sensation in the body triggered a ?memory? in the mind, a memory of real, true bread and wine, with which one?s soul had had contact in heaven but with which it had lost contact through being embodied in flesh.

You see, for Plato, what was really ?real? was the idea. Why? Well, think of a table for instance, any table. It has four legs and a flat top. We all know a table when we see one. However, the physical table is not really real because the physical table can be destroyed, burned, and all that is left is ash. However, all one has to do is to think of

?table?, as I just asked you to do, and we can picture a table in our mind.?

The idea of ?table? cannot be destroyed and, therefore, that is why the idea is what is real. When Christian theologians applied this understanding of reality to the Eucharist, they held that when priest and congregation uttered the prayers of the Eucharist, God brought about a change in the heavenly reference of the bread and wine. At the outset, the physical objects were symbols of true bread and wine (the idea), and brought those who experienced the physical symbols to knowledge of the intellectual reality.

By the action of God?s Spirit, the physical objects became participating symbols in the body and blood of the risen and ascended Christ, and brought those who received these symbols to the knowledge of this much greater spiritual reality.

Just as a reminder, participating symbols function not only to point beyond themselves to another reality, but they actually become the reality toward which they point. Words are participating symbols. Every word has a meaning but, all by itself, it has no context which limits its meaning. String some words together and you have a sentence and the word makes more sense. Sting some sentences together and we have a paragraph which functions to communicate an idea. The word becomes the idea and it participates in the reality of the idea. Other common participating symbols are money (participating in the time and effort it took us to earn the money) and the American flag (the red participating in the symbolism of the blood shed over 235 years of American History, the blue for courage, the stars for the 50 states, 13 red and white stripes for the original 13 colonies, white for hon- or). The last thing anyone would do if I gave that person $1,000 would be to burn it or throw it away. But, why? It?s just a symbol. Because it is a participating symbol that has power and we can exchange the money for almost anything we want. When the American flag is desecrated, most of us don?t like such disrespectful behavior be- cause the flag is more than a piece of cloth. It is a participating symbol of our nation and of the brave men and women who have fought to keep us free. All participating symbols have power.

Since it is by the Spirit that the physical objects become participating symbols, in Eastern Orthodox theology, it is during the invocation of the Holy Spirit in the Eucharistic Prayer that the presence of Christ becomes real in the bread and wine, not during the Institution Narrative as in the West. The part of the prayer in Rite 1 when this takes place is when the Celebrant prays, ?And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us; and, of thy almighty goodness, vouchsafe to bless and sanctify, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, these thy gifts and creatures of bread and wine...? BCP p. 335. In the Rite 2 service this text becomes, ?Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him.? BCP 363.

As in the doctrine of transubstantiation, no change in the physical properties of the bread and wine is involved; but unlike the doctrine of transubstantiation, the change involved does not occur in the bread and wine (the substance), but in the heaven of God and his archetypal creatures.

This doctrine brings into focus a different way of understanding the Eucharist. It is the first theory of sacramental presence to be elaborated by Christian theologians, and continues to have many advocates. To the extent that ?all Western philosophy is a series of footnotes to Plato? (Whitehead), it can make sense of the Eucharistic experience to modern men and women far beyond the bonds of Eastern Orthodoxy. But its dualism of soul and body, and its implicit downgrading of sense-experienced reality in favor of an intangible idea, make it inaccessible to many others. It is important to keep the following disclaimer in mind. These theories (transubstantian, transessentiation,?

memorialism, and others) may be entertained by believers, if they find them helpful. The task of the- ology is to provide just such reasons as aids to faith. Especially in regard to the Eucharist, our church refuses to require its members to believe any particular theory, for all have been tried and found wanting. They easily be- come stumbling blocks to faith and the cause of great dissension (Liturgy for Living, p. 212).

Ivory Coast border post near Liberia attacked

A border post at Ivory Coast's restive western frontier with Liberia was attacked Monday by gunmen, an Ivorian military source and residents on both sides of the border told AFP.

The Ivorian source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said an army post at Pekambly near the town of Toulepleu "near the border with Liberia was attacked".

The attack followed another in the frontier region in June that killed seven UN peacekeepers.

No information was immediately available on the identities of the perpetrators.

"There was fighting between Toulepleu and the border, I fled the town," said an Ivory Coast resident.

"We heard heavy gun sounds this morning right at the border," said Alfred Tarleh who lives in a village across a small river on the Liberian side of the border, in view of the town which was attacked.

"It was so heavy that we got afraid and started packing our things to leave the border," Tarleh told AFP, saying the shooting had later stopped. "The rebels have taken over the border on the Ivorian side."

Another resident of the Liberian village, Robert Cole, said: "From where I am, I can see them in T-shirt and jeans. There are at least ten of them at the border, the rest of them are said to be advancing on Toulepleu".

In Toe's Town, Liberia, a few kilometres from the border, residents reported long convoys of Liberian soldiers and immigration officers heading towards the border.

"The soldiers, police and the immigration officers passed with arms in the long convoy," said resident Anita Dweh.

The June attacks were believed to have been carried out by followers of Ivory Coast's former president Laurent Gbagbo, whose refusal to step down after a 2010 election defeat sparked a four-month conflict which claimed some 3,000 lives.

Gbagbo was captured in April last year and has been in custody in The Hague since November on allegations of crimes against humanity.

Diehard Gbagbo supporters are believed to have fled to Liberia after his fall. Liberian mercenaries were also widely implicated in the Ivory Coast conflict.

Human Rights Watch in June reported that these fighters were carrying out deadly cross-border raids in Ivory Coast.

Aerobic

Also known as cardiovascular, aerobic exercises boost heart rate, work muscles for extended periods of time, and increase breathing. Any rhythmic, continuous motion will do this like running, swimming, jumping jacks, jump rope, brisk walking, or bicycling.

Aerobic exercises may have the best overall effect on health. While flexibility and strength exercises tend to focus on individual muscle groups, aerobic exercises work on the muscles, lungs, and heart, improving the efficiency, strength, and endurance of them all.

Aerobic exercise forces our bodies to adapt to the heightened demand for oxygen and energy. Our bodies begin pulling in more oxygen from the lungs and making the heart beat faster. Prolonged exercise increases the amount of oxygen your lungs bring in and builds more muscle in the heart. As the heart gains muscle it is capable of pumping more blood with each beat.

This greater stroke volume means the heart doesn?t have to work as hard to meet the demands of exercise or daily use. This improved efficiency means the heart lasts longer, just like a machine running at peak efficiency will last longer than one that must work harder to accomplish the same thing.

Downstream from the heart, the muscles also adapt by becoming more efficient. Muscle cells begin consuming oxygen more effectively. They use this oxygen to burn carbohydrates and fat and power every aspect of cellular function. The amount of mitochondria, the powerhouses of cells, in muscle also increases as you do more aerobic exercise, burning through more fuel more efficiently. The change in your energy levels is usually noticeable after just a few days to weeks as the body no longer struggles to meet energy needs.

This increased mitochondria performance then encourages cells to break into fat stores to supply more energy. Fat has more than double the caloric energy of carbohydrates, but it requires more oxygen to be metabolized and put to use.

So, as your body becomes more efficient at bringing in oxygen and your energy requirements skyrocket, fat becomes a much easier and effective means to acquire that energy. If you want to lose weight, extended aerobic exercise will be key to your success.

Apart from weight loss, aerobic exercise also reduces the risks of many diseases and disorders. Ryan has proposed a voucher-like system to reshape Medicare that independent budget analysts say would likely mean higher costs for seniors. Ryan maintains the changes are needed to preserve Medicare for future generations.

If the well-regarded Consumer Reports has taken some criticism, over the years, it?s for being too import friendly, but you?d be hard-pressed to tell from the non-profit publication?s latest issue ? where it takes the Toyota Prius C and Honda Civic to task as two of ?Five Popular Cars to Avoid.?

That could be bad news for the two makers as CR does, indeed carry significant weight among more affluent, import-oriented buyers.? The Civic is a critical model in the Honda line-up but has already taken sharp criticism since its 2011 redesign, while the Prius C is the newest member of Toyota?s expanded hybrid family.

?Just because a car generates a lot of buzz or is a best seller doesn?t mean that it?s a good choice for you,? warns the magazine.

Chrysler to Offer ?Hot Spot on Wheels?

The two Japanese makers aren?t the only ones coming under fire in the September 2012 issue of Consumer Reports, however.? The magazine also targets three domestic models:

• The popular Ford Edge crossover;
• The Jeep Liberty sport-utility vehicle; and
• The Dodge Grand Caravan minivan.

The magazine notes that all five of the models ?may be on a lot of buyers? shopping lists, but we suggest you steer clear.?? The reason?? Either reliability problems or poor tests in CR testing ? or both.

Jalili's meeting with Assad, shown on Syrian TV, was the first broadcast footage of the president in two weeks. Assad has been shown on television only twice since a July 18 bombing which killed four members of his inner circle, the biggest single blow he has suffered during an armed insurgency.

Jalili said the 17-month uprising was not a domestic matter for Syria but a "conflict between the axis of resistance and its enemies in the region and the world".

The "axis of resistance" refers to Iran's alliance with Syria and Lebanon's Shi'ite group Hezbollah, which fought a month-long war with Israel in 2006, with Iranian and Syrian support. It also includes some Palestinian militant groups.

Assad reiterated his determination to defeat the rebels, affirming "the Syrian people and government's determination to cleanse the country of terrorists," the TV report said.

Reuters blogging platform hacked, false Syria blog posted

(Reuters) - Thomson Reuters said the blogging platform of the Reuters News website was compromised on Friday and a false posting purporting to carry an interview with a Syrian rebel leader was illegally posted on a Reuters' journalist's blog.

"Reuters.com was a target of a hack on Friday," the company said in a statement. "Our blogging platform was compromised and fabricated blog posts were falsely attributed to several Reuters journalists."

One of the false posts purported to be an interview with Riad al-Asaad, the head of the Free Syrian Army.

"Reuters did not carry out such an interview and the posting has been deleted," the Reuters statement said.

In the purported interview, the FSA leader was alleged to have said his forces were pulling back from the northern province of Aleppo after clashes with the Syrian army.

The Free Syrian Army issued a statement denying that any such interview had taken place, and blamed President Bashar al-Assad's government for the false posting.

The report "was fabricated by the regime, as it seems the news agency was hacked", it said in a statement.

Thomson Reuters had no immediate information on who was behind the hacking.

Reuters journalists in Aleppo have reported Free Syrian Army fighters are still present in the city and outlying province.

The Reuters.com blogging platform was taken offline on Friday while the company works to address the problem.

FBI: $15,000 reward for mosque arson suspect

Man captured on surveillance video who is sought by law enforcers for an apparent arson attack on a mosque in Joplin, Mo., on July 4.

The FBI announced a $15,000 reward for information that helps nab a suspect captured on surveillance video throwing a lit object onto the roof of an Islamic Center in Joplin, Mo.

The nationwide appeal for tips that lead to the identity, whereabouts and indictment of the white man who appears on the video image came Wednesday, about two weeks after it was announced locally, said Bridget Patton, spokesperson for the FBI in Kansas City, Mo.

"We need to put that picture out to see if anyone can identify that person or give us any information to further this investigation," said Patton. She said the appeal could "just someone to stop and think? and call in pertinent information, like, 'you know, I did see a car on that street.'"

A fire on the roof of the Islamic Center of Joplin was reported about 3:30 a.m. July 4, the FBI said. It was extinguished by the Jasper County Fire Department before it could cause interior damage.

The mosque was vacant at the time, Patton said.

She said she could not comment on whether the initial local appeal had generated any useful tips.

The $15,000 reward includes $10,000 from the FBI and $5,000 from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

Federal law criminalizes arson and vandalism against houses of worship committed either because of the race or ethnicity of the group using the property or, in certain circumstances, because of the religious nature of the property, the FBI noted in a release.

The FBI plans to publish the whole video recording of the attack on its site on Friday, Patton said.

Making Movies That Zoom Into Foreign Worlds

Photographer Roman Vishniac, perhaps most famous for documenting Jewish communities in Eastern Europe, was also a pioneer of cinemicroscopy ? filming through a microscope. Flora Lichtman looks back at Vishniac's science cinema and talks to Dutch photographer Wim van Egmond about how he makes his award-winning images and videos of microorganisms.

You're listening to SCIENCE FRIDAY; I'm Ira Flatow. A little later in the program, we'll be talking about NASA's landing of its new probe, Curiosity, to the Martian surface. But with us now is Flora Lichtman with our Video Pick of the Week. Hi, Flora.

FLORA LICHTMAN, BYLINE: Hi, Ira.

FLATOW: This is a soothing...

(LAUGHTER)

FLATOW: I mean, I saw the video pick. It's so soothing, although it's on a topic that you wouldn't think is soothing at all.

LICHTMAN: It is a little bit soothing. We are going to the movies this week. So sit back, relax, and the stars of these films usually have one cell.

FLATOW: One cell.

LICHTMAN: Yeah.

FLATOW: Not like a phone. In the old days, we talked about cells...

LICHTMAN: The analog...

(LAUGHTER)

LICHTMAN: Yeah, we're looking at how people make movies through a microscope. And I hadn't really thought about this much before this week, but there's a sort of long history of this, and there have been a few real pioneers of this field. And one of them is a guy, a photographer called Roman Vishniac.

And you may know this name because he's famous for sort of a very different kind of photography. He took portraits. He has a picture of Einstein that's pretty famous. And he is famous for documenting Jews in Eastern Europe for World War II.

But it turns out that he also was this huge science buff, and he made these educational movies funded by NSF and others for classroom use, and a lot of them featured his micro-movies, these movies that he did in his New York apartment through the microscope with, you know, pond scum that he collected I don't know where, my guess would be Central Park, just looking at some of the footage.

FLATOW: Right, and so then he trained - this moviemaker trained his camera into the lens of the microscope.

LICHTMAN: Yes, that's right.

FLATOW: And took some gorgeous video, right?

LICHTMAN: They're very abstract. I talked with Heather Heckman, who's at the University of South Carolina Libraries, and they loaned us some of this Vishniac footage. And she was, like, it's almost like avant-garde film because, you know, you look at these oyster larvae pulsating, and you don't know what they are. They're just - but it's really beautiful.

So we talked - so we learn about Vishniac and also sort of figure out how things have changed since the '50s, '60s and '70s, which is when he was doing his work. And we spoke with Wim van Egmond, who's this Dutch photographer who wins all these Nikon Small Worlds contests. I think people who follow this will know his name. But he makes these beautiful, microscopic videos and videos through the microscope and photos, too.

FLATOW: And they're all one-celled creatures?

LICHTMAN: Not all of them.

FLATOW: Not all of them?

LICHTMAN: So for example we show a hydra, which has multiple cells, but the resolution is so good on this...

FLATOW: It's stunning.

LICHTMAN: That you can see the single-celled creatures cruising around on top like, you know, like they're on a highway, on these little lanes.

FLATOW: It's gorgeous.

LICHTMAN: It's gorgeous.

FLATOW: It really is. I mean, the fact - and he uses the microscopes that I used as a kid, right, from the '60s because those must be Bausch and Lomb or something like that.

LICHTMAN: The Zeiss microscope.

FLATOW: Zeiss microscope, different company.

LICHTMAN: Yeah, right. No, he said that actually if you want to get into this, you know, the cost of one of these microscopes from the '60s or '70s is about that of a computer, but it'll last you a lifetime.

FLATOW: Forever. The optics are just terrific.

LICHTMAN: Yeah, and they haven't - you know, that's good enough, and really the advances have come with these digital cameras.

FLATOW: Yeah. So he looks through the lenses of the microscope, and he looks at these - and you made it as your video pick of the week. You put together a montage of all these gorgeous images.

LICHTMAN: It was a fun one to work on.

FLATOW: Yeah, because I know that is your passion also.

LICHTMAN: Microfauna, can't get enough.

FLATOW: Microflora and fauna.

LICHTMAN: That's right.

FLATOW: Excuse me, I just thought of - wow, and was this something he started out to do, I mean, as a scientist?

LICHTMAN: No, so Wim van Egmond is an artist, and he was trained as an artist. He was a painter at first, and he was really into painting from these scientific illustrations, biological illustrations from hundreds of years ago. And he said, well, you know, I could just do this myself. So he purchased his first microscope about 20 years ago and since then has been kind of perfecting the technique.

But when he started, you know, he was also working with film, like Roman Vishniac. And, you know, when he had to look up what he was looking at, these organisms, he was looking in reference books, things that are just unthinkable these days, of course you would just Google.

So he said that, you know, progress has gotten much faster because now you can just look and see your result immediately. You don't have to develop your film, and - you know, and so he's gotten - it sounds like he's gotten - he's sort of refined his techniques much more quickly in the days of the digital camera.

FLATOW: Now I know you like to limit the size of your video pick to like three or four minutes.

LICHTMAN: This one could not be limited. It called for a double feature.

(LAUGHTER)

FLATOW: There is no little announcement in the middle to go take your seat.

LICHTMAN: Intermission.

FLATOW: The little curtain coming - no, it's not there. But it's actually, it's really beautiful, and I'm surprised, you know, of the lighting. You know, you look at these things, how do you get the lighting so pretty?

LICHTMAN: Yeah, I think this is a main component. That's what Wim van Egmond said. And these new digital cameras require less light. The film really required a lot of light to illuminate it, but of course there are - you know, they're backlit, and I think getting that right is challenging.

And the other thing he said is that the key to getting a good image is also preparing the slide in the right way.

FLATOW: Yeah.

LICHTMAN: So you want the organism - it's like taking a portrait, that's sort of how he thinks about it. But of course your microorganism doesn't see it that way.

(LAUGHTER)

LICHTMAN: So you have to figure out how to get them to sit still, and that requires sort of propping up the cover slip with little dots of Vaseline. That's his trick. But you want to sort of squish it just enough so it doesn't move but not too much so that you run it over, essentially.

FLATOW: Well, you don't want to kill the...

LICHTMAN: Yeah, that's the - you don't want to kill it.
